Cut out the Easter Candy….or should I say all the candy! Sugar truly is a booger. It causes us to crave more and more sugar. It alters our taste buds to not taste something as sweet so then we add even more sugar. And don’t think that using artificial sugars will help anymore. Artificial sugars can actually be more detrimental to the body’s health than cane sugar. Keep reading to learn why artificial sugars should be avoided and tips to improve your sweetness!
Did you know that artificial sugars per serving is actually 2 calories! But on a label it says 0. This is because manufacturers can write 0 as long as it is less than 5 calories per serving. So how many servings are you eating throughout the day? Start adding them up! A little bit here and there makes a lot in the long haul.
Did you know that artificial sugars can disrupt our digestive system? Artificial sugars are technically a chemical. Therefore, consuming artificial sugars over a long period of time can imbalance the digestive tract and alter energy production within the body.
Did you know that artificial sugars can delete the feeling of fullness? Artificial sweetness still produces a rise in insulin within the body but since it is a chemical it doesn’t create as much satiety within the body. This causes a person to feel less full in comparison to someone eating cane sugar.
So how can we gravitate away from artificial sugars and reduce our consumption of raw sugar?
- For sweetness utilize honey or maple syrup, both calorie dense but provide vitamins.
- Cut the proportions in half. Instead of eliminating the sweet dessert eat only 3 bites instead of your typical 6.
- Eat more healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocado) which have been shown to increase fullness and satiety but decrease sugar cravings.
- Get moving. Exercise can provide the feel good endorphins that a sweet treat typically provides.
- If you bake, make the dessert look super fun so no one will want to eat it!
What will you do this week to cut out the candy?
